Practise the patient interview before the real one.

Talk out loud with a simulated patient, in English or in French. Read the case handout, lead a five-minute interview, then look back on how it went.

Simulated patient · not a real person

Example in

Example exchange. You: Can you tell me what’s been bothering you? Simulated patient: It’s this rash on my arms. It’s been itchy for a while now.

Communication is assessed with standardized patients, but time to practise with one is scarce.

Each session takes an actor, a room and a time slot. Elvyn gives you a patient who replies out loud, as often as your program allows.

How it works

Check your microphone, then confirm three statements.

Each case opens with its student handout in your language: who you are meeting, your role, and what you are not expected to do. You test the microphone and confirm three statements before the interview starts.

Lead a five-minute interview.

You speak and the patient answers out loud in real time, with captions and a clock on screen. The replies are not scripted, so you set the direction and close with a summary. Use fictional details only.

A live encounter. The patient’s caption reads "I’ve been really tired lately, even after a full night’s sleep."

Reflect while it is fresh.

Afterwards, the handout’s reflection prompts guide a short self-review. Then you rate the simulation and report any technical trouble. By default Elvyn keeps no recording or transcript; the avatar service processes speech live to run the conversation.

ElvynReflect
The reflection page: the first After the interview prompt, with a note that nothing typed there is saved.

A guide walks you through each step, if you want one.

Short clips introduce Elvyn and each case, and explain what to write up afterwards. Each clip waits for you to press play and has captions; one switch hides them all. The presenter is an AI avatar, and a few French clips are still to come.

Welcome to Elvyn.

Here you practise a short interview with a simulated patient who has come to a clinic.

You’ll pick a case, read the instructions, check your microphone, and then talk with the patient for up to five minutes.

Three cases, written by a nursing instructor.

Each case was written for a nursing communication course and fits a five-minute session. All three run in English and in French, with a student handout and a debrief guide for the facilitator. Some translations are still with the author for review.

Your program decides which cases you see and how many minutes you have, and can write its own cases too. Instructors see ratings and minutes used, never the conversation.

Now in testing with a nursing communication course.

We are improving Elvyn with the course’s students and instructors. If you teach nursing, run simulation or study clinical communication, write to us.
